Welcome to another delicious week at The Hungry Vegan.  We'd like to welcome June with an unusual poem, written against tea, that was written just prior to the American Revolution.


Depending on the availability of some ingredients, we sometimes make last-minute changes to our menu.  For instance, if we cannot find an organic ingredient that we need, we will substitute something else.

What We'll Be Preparing & Shipping the Week of
June 2nd:

Soups:

 

  1. Tuscan Ribollita vegetable stock, cabbage, white beans, olive oil, onions, garlic, tomatoes, celery, carrots, tomato paste, herbs and spices, salt

  1. Potato Soup with Fennel and Leeks vegetable stock, potatoes, leeks, fennel, olive oil, garlic, soy milk, shoyu, herbs and spices, salt

 

Grain, Legume, and Vegetable Dishes:

 

  1. Asparagus Pasta with Mushrooms and Ginger whole grain pasta, vegetable stock, asparagus, mushrooms, rice, scallions, shoyu, toasted sesame oil, olive oil, ginger, garlic, herbs and spices, salt

  1. Indian Semolina with Peanuts and Cilantro semolina or cream of wheat, canola oil, peas, peanuts, curry leaves, shallots, ginger, chiles, herbs and spices, salt

  1. Refried Beans pinto beans, carrot, onions, olive oil, hot sauce, herbs and spices, salt

  1. Tomatoes Stuffed with Jasmine Rice and Mint tomatoes, jasmine rice, olive oil, mint, garlic, salt

  1. Tofu with Cashews and Mixed Vegetables tofu, olive oil, shoyu, hoisin, scallions, cloves, ginger, cashews, sesame oil, vegetables

  1. Tunisian Carrot Salad – carrots, olive oil, vinegar, herbs and spices, salt

  1. Ethiopian Collards – collards, onions, chiles, garlic, olive oil, salt

  1. Fig-Date Bread – unbleached flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, flaxseed, dates, figs, margarine, walnuts, salt

 

Desserts:

 

  1. Orange-Poppyseed Cake - unbleached flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, tofu, agar, arrowroot, soy milk, orange juice, apple juice, lemon juice, agave, poppy seeds, olive oil, vanilla, orange zest, salt

  1. German Apple Cake – unbleached flour, apples, margarine, applesauce, baking powder, sugar, soy milk, brown sugar, ginger, cinnamon

Note:  For those with food allergies/sensitivities, please be aware that, while we generally use the ingredients posted with our menus, we sometimes make substitutions or additions while cooking.

       

 


A Lady's Adieu to Her Tea-Table

 

FAREWELL the Tea-board with your gaudy attire,

Ye cups and ye saucers that I did admire;

To my cream pot and tongs I now bid adieu;

That pleasure's all fled that I once found in you.

Farewell pretty chest that so lately did shine,

With hyson and congo and best double fine;

Many a sweet moment by you I have sat,

Hearing girls and old maids to tattle and chat;

And the spruce coxcomb laugh at nothing at all,

Only some silly work that might happen to fall.

No more shall my teapot so generous be

In filling the cups with this pernicious tea,

For I'll fill it with water and drink out the same,

Before I'll lose LIBERTY that dearest name,

Because I am taught (and believe it is fact)

That our ruin is aimed at in the late act,

Of imposing a duty on all foreign Teas,

Which detestable stuff we can quit when we please.

LIBERTY'S The Goddess that I do adore,

And I'll maintain her right until my last hour,

Before she shall part I will die in the cause,
